For the Romans, the rose symbolized joy, love and beauty. Hence it was associated with Comus (Comus is the god of revelry, festivity, and nocturnal dalliances) and Bacchus (Roman god of wine, agriculture, and fertility) Roman Brides and Grooms were crowned with the 'bloom of love' and at funerals roses were used in profusion.
